Time for an update on www.electroniclight.com

For new subscribers:

ElectronicLight.com is an affiliate site that we've set up - just to see if there's really any money in affiliate programs. From time to time, we give you
an inside look at what we do, how we do it and how much we make.

--------
TRAFFIC:
--------

Yahoo now displays Google listings mixed into their own directory listings - and we're in heaven. We've always done well at Google and I've never been able to bring myself to spend that non-refundable $299 to (maybe) get into Yahoo. Now I don't have to.

The numbers...

Average visits per day: 640
Average page-views per day: 1219

Both these figures have just about doubled after the change at Yahoo.

------
MONEY:
------

I still believe that this site under performs. Here are the numbers...

Average sales per day: 0.82
Average sales commission per day: $11.13

It adds up to about $330 per month - not much, but then, we built the site about 6 months back and have done almost no work on it since then. A couple more automated sites like this one and it all adds up to a healthy sideline.

What does worry me is the conversion rate...

640 visits a day and only 0.82 sales a day. That's only a 0.13% visitor to customer conversion rate!

Here are the possible reasons:

--- Our visitors are not targeted enough
--- They're confused when they click a "buy" link and leave the site to go to the vendor. They might think it's some kind of ad or gimmick.

We optimized for very targeted keywords like:

bathroom lighting (number 1 at Google)
wall lamps (number 1 at Google)
pendant lights (number 1 at Google)
tiffany lamp (number 2 at Google)
tiffany lamps (number 3 at Google)

These words are our main source of search engine traffic and I'm assuming people who enter these words are lamp shoppers.

On some of the product pages we added little images that say, for example, "Supplier: CatalogCity" - so that it makes more sense for the shopper when she clicks and arrives on the CatalogCity web site.

Those pages do not seem to be converting any better than the ones without the images.

---------------
THE BOTTOM LINE
---------------

It's hard to admit, but it seems our site just isn't a sales- getter. I'm far from giving up (of course). I'll keep trying different things and you'll be the first to know when I discover a cure for low conversion rates :-)

------------
THINGS TO-DO
------------

Rewriting some of the product descriptions and measuring the effect. Will let you know how that works out.

Cheers

André
