Abstract Logos
Although the term "abstract logo" is used fairly commonly, a logo can only really be called abstract if it is truly non-figuritive... in other words if you can't tell it from a hole in the ground. Actually, a hole in the ground would still be figuritive. The technical debate aside, abstract logos are perfect in instances where the company plans future expansion or where they offer a very wide range of services. The logo above was done for an ISP, but the company also provides many related services, so an abstract, techno-ish logo suited them perfectly. In this design, a progress bar was used as a reference.
